iPhone & Ext. Voicemail Systems, iPhone plays strings of numbers too long

On August 8, 2011, in Uncategorized, by Jon Roemer

Just got the iPhone and set it. All is good except I'm finding that the iPhone doesn't like to play nice with voice mail systems if you are setting it to automatically end the numbers (e.g. mailbox #, pass code #, etc.).For example for my home voicemail (Verizon landline) I dial their access code then the * sign, then my tel. #, then the pass code. I can put this long string in the contact/phone info. It looks like this.VVVVVVVVVV,,*,,MMMMMMMMMM,,PPPP,1V=The telephone number to access the verizon landline voicemail system”,”=The 2 second pause that the iPhone can insertM=My mailbox numberP=My pass code1=Dialing 1 to get the first messageThe problem is that the iPhone plays the individual “M” and “P” numbers much too long. You can hear this if you run it on speaker phone. This trips up the voicemail system and makes it think the wrong number is being entered. I never run into this before. Any one else finding this?

I've got EXACTLY the same problem. I hope somebody will post a work-around.

Good to know it's not me only.

The only work around I know is plugging all the numbers in manually each time you check voicemail (again, not voicemail for the iPhone but an external voicemail system).

Hopefully Apple will fix this very soon.

You can send a note to Apple about this here:

Me too! I find I have problems while on speaker phone mostly. I can usually get in via the ear piece. Background noise?

Yup. This is a really bizarre bug on Apple's part. It dials the DTMF tones long and slow and nearly overlapping. Trips up my home voicemail everytime. VERY annoying.

For now NOT using the speaker Phone feature seems to make it work. The DTMF tones are long still but it works better.

You are right. When NOT using speaker phone it seems to work fine. The problem arises primarily WHEN using the speaker phone.
